Trumpocalypse: Restoring American Democracy

Trump’s bastardised brand of democracy will leave a lasting impact on global politics, so how do we bring the US, and the free world, back from the brink? “You do not beat Trump until you have restored an America that has room for all its people”, says David Frum.

The staunch republican, prolific political commentator and speechwriter for President George W. Bush is here to go beyond the trite conflicts of Republicans and Democrats, showing us how everyday people are the key to truly making America great again.

The Trumpocalypse is here, and it’s up to us to build a future from its ruins. Will an idyllic democracy rise from the rubble, or will the increasingly authoritarian and evasive cabal keep its hold on the free world?

It’s fair to say that Donald Trump’s legacy will be far-reaching. His presidency took the world by surprise, with many commentators painting his campaign as entertainment rather than politics. But here we are, in a reality where Trump is the leader of arguably the most powerful country in the world. He has gained so much influence, adoration and infamy that even his tweets are a force to reckon with – think about how incredible that is!

So, who was responsible for letting Trump into the White House? In a holistic, “everything is connected, man” sense, we all are. But more than most, the people who were afraid that their country was building a future that didn’t have a place for them were the driving force behind his victory. These were people who craved a cultural shake-up, one that would see them not fade into obsolescence but rise up in the social hierarchy. Trump used those fears to connect with the disenfranchised, whipping them into an evangelical following who defend and rationalise his actions, even when they are down-right bizarre.

They are advocates, defenders and martyrs of Trump’s bastardised brand of democracy. In a post-Trumpocalypse world, we will have to find a way to either reconcile them to true democracy, or to protect it from them.

So how do we bring the US back from the brink? “You do not beat Trump until you have restored an America that has room for all its people,” says David Frum.

A staunch Republican and even stauncher critic of Donald Trump, David Frum is a prolific political commentator with an illustrious career in US and global politics. He served as speechwriter and special assistant to President George W. Bush, as senior foreign policy adviser to the Rudy Giuliani presidential campaign, and more recently served as chairman of the board of trustees of the leading UK center-right think tank, Policy Exchange. Currently, he’s a senior editor at The Atlantic and the author of numerous books, including the New York Times Bestseller Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic.

David recognises that the fight against Trump goes beyond the trite conflicts of Republicans and Democrats; it is a battle for the soul of the United States, one where real democracy needs to come out ahead for the benefit of all countries. He details this in his latest book ‘Trumpocalypse: Restoring American Democracy’, and at this event he dives deeper into what is needed to bring America back to its former glory.

The foundations of a democracy are its people, and David wants to show you the ramifications of a third of the US electorate refusing to abandon Trump, and how they have enabled him to distort American and global politics for many years to come.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. David will also explore how we as everyday people can build from the US’ twisted democracy, to repair the damage Trump has brought, and to amend the wrongs that, under his leadership, we have inflicted upon each other.
