FTL Half Lockup

Will there be a centre to hold?

The 2020 US presidential election will go down as one of the most explosive in the nation’s history. Early voting records have been shattered, and polls are indicating that it’ll be an incredibly close race.

To understand the racial and social ramifications of the election’s results, Quillette is proud to present veteran professor and public intellectual Glenn Loury, hosted by Josh Szeps!

Unafraid to voice his opinions, Glenn has urged influential intellectuals to distinguish between legitimate protests and riots, cautioning that “America [is] in a very dangerous situation now…the dry tinder lays at hand needing only a spark to start a conflagration” – Condemn this Violence without Equivocation, Glenn Loury.

Will this election prove to be the spark that he warns of? If the election is a narrow victory, will the US see more civil unrest? Join the seasoned scholar of racial inequality as Glenn provides invaluable commentary of America’s “racial reckoning”, tackling the issue with empathy, passion and analytical rigour.

Who is Glenn Loury?

A scholar of racial inequality and a public intellectual, Glenn Loury has led an illustrious career, being the first black tenured professor of economics in the history of Harvard University.

He hosts the popular podcast The Glenn Show, and authored The Anatomy of Racial Inequality, Race, Incarceration and American Values, and One by One From the Inside Out. Loury has also been a contributing editor of The New Republic and The Boston Review, and has written hundreds of essays and reviews in journals of public affairs in the US and internationally.

Navigating the current moment has never been more tense.

Social-distancing is keeping us apart physically, and while we might try to connect with others online, hyper-partisanship, cancel culture and tribalism are driving us to be in constant opposition.

Echo-chambers and shouting matches are crowding out the important conversations we need to have.

Quillette wants to change that. Their new online live event series ‘Free Thought Live’, proudly supported by Think Inc., aims to help you grapple with the current moment, while bringing an international community together to repair some of the wreckage of 2020. Bold thinkers, unafraid to challenge the dogmas held by political tribes, will be given a platform to speak at a time when fresh ideas have never been more necessary.
